Preventing Indigestion

The best treatment for indigestion is a good defense - ending the bad habits that lead to the indigestion in the first place. Indigestion usually goes away on its own (and antacids like Zantac 75 mg tablets acid reducer and Pepto-Bismol can help with the discomfort before it goes away), but if you can prevent it to begin with, you won't even have to go that far.
So what habits are causing your indigestion? Probably some that aren't a good idea even without the later discomfort.

  • Don't chew with your mouth open
  • Don't talk while you chew
  • Don't eat late at night
  • Don't bolt your food
  • Avoid spicy foods (but only if you get indigestion every time you eat them)
  • Don't smoke (oh, there's the reason we all needed!)
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages
  • Relax after meals, but don't lie down
  • Keep track of the foods you eat that cause indigestion so that you can avoid them

Antacids are probably the best treatment for indigestion, which is usually caused by excessive acid. Neutralizing the acid calms down most symptoms of indigestion. Some antacids are more specific, as Pepto-Bismols anti-diarrheal, which treats both the indigestion and other accompanying problems. Always remember that talking to your doctor is the best option if the problem becomes severe or persistent.

The discomfort of indigestion can throw off your whole day or evening. However, with a few tweaks to your routine (and a few manners, hint nudge to the people talking while they chew) you can avoid the discomfort later that actually disrupts your routine.
